Frequently Asked Questions About Cycling Trips in France
A first bike trip often raises some very practical questions. What level should you choose? How many kilometers will you have to ride? Will your luggage be transported? What happens if it rains or if you have a mechanical problem?
Here are some helpful tips for choosing a vacation that fits your pace and preparing for your trip with Evazio.
What is an independent cycling trip?
A self-guided cycling tour allows you to follow an itinerary at your own pace, without a guide or a pre-assigned group. The main details of your trip are arranged before you depart: accommodations, itinerary, practical information, and services included in your package.
You’re free to choose your departure time, your breaks, and how much time to spend on sightseeing. This option is ideal for travelers who want to maintain their independence while still benefiting from reliable coordination.
What does a cycling trip organized by Evazio include?
Services vary by tour. They generally include accommodations, travel documents, the information needed to follow the itinerary, luggage transfer when provided, and local assistance during the trip.
Rentals of standard or electric bikes, certain meals, additional nights, or transfers may be included or offered as optional extras. Details can be found in the “Price Includes” section of each trip.
Do you have to be athletic to go on a bike trip?
You don’t need to be a highly experienced cyclist to tackle the most accessible routes. The most important thing is to choose a trip that matches your stamina, your comfort level on a bike, and your ability to ride for several days in a row.
The "Relax" and "Easy" levels are designed for beginner or occasional cyclists. One or two rides before departure will help you check your position, comfort, and pace. Check out our guide to help you prepare for your first cycling trip in France.
How many kilometers do we travel each day?
The distance depends on the route and the difficulty level chosen. "Relax" trips generally feature stages ranging from 15 to 25 kilometers. "Easy" routes are often between 20 and 40 kilometers, "Moderate" routes between 40 and 60 kilometers, and "Sport" trips can reach 60 to 80 kilometers or more.
The terrain, wind, road surface, and planned stops are just as important as the distance. A 40-kilometer stage along a canal will be easier to manage than an equivalent stage on hilly terrain.
How can I tell if a tour is really at my level?
Consider the daily distance, elevation gain, terrain, and length of your trip. Also ask yourself a simple question: How far can you go today while still having enough energy to start again tomorrow?
The "Relaxed," "Easy," "Moderate," "Sporty," and "Expert" ratings make it easier to compare routes. Our guide helps you assess your level of cycling.
What route should you choose for your first bike trip?
Flat or gently rolling routes, greenways, and paths along a canal or river are often the best choices for beginners.
The Garonne Canal, certain sections of the Canal des Deux Mers, the Flow Vélo, the Loire à Vélo, and the Arcachon Basin are great ways to experiencebike touring, with manageable stages and plenty of opportunities to take a break. Check out our selectionof easy routes for your first bike trip.
Do the tours take place exclusively on bike paths?
Not always. Depending on the destination, the route may follow greenways, bike paths, gravel roads, secondary roads, or a few sections shared with cars.
The terrain and the main challenges are described in the trip details. Travelers looking to avoid heavy traffic may want to choose trips along bike routes and greenways.
Is it better to choose a traditional bike or an electric bike?
A classic bike is ideal for people who ride regularly and want to enjoy the traditional experience of bike touring.
Electric bikes make it easier to tackle hilly terrain, help bridge the fitness gap between partners or group members, and help conserve energy over several days. You still need to pedal and manage the battery life. Our comparison of electric bikes versus traditional bikes will help you choose.
Can we travel together if the participants aren't at the same level?
Yes. Choosing reasonable stages and possibly using an e-bike often makes it possible to find a pace that works for everyone.
The difficulty level of the trip should be based on the least experienced person in the group. This ensures that the trip remains enjoyable for everyone, without requiring them to endure a series of long waits or excessive physical exertion. The Evazio team can help you choose a tour that’s suited to your group’s composition.
Can we bring our own bikes?
You can use your own bike as long as it is suitable for the terrain and has been properly serviced before departure.
You’ll need to plan ahead for transportation to the starting point and back from the destination. For a linear route or a trip accessible by train, renting a vehicle on site can greatly simplify the logistics.
Can you rent a bike from Evazio?
You can rent a regular or electric bike on many routes. The bike is selected based on your height and the planned route.
The models, equipment provided, pickup locations, and return conditions vary by destination. This information is specified at the time of booking. We recommend booking early if you’d like to rent an electric bike, especially during the summer.
How does baggage transfer work?
When the transfer is included, you drop off your main piece of luggage in the morning at the location specified by your lodging. It is transported to the next stop while you cycle.
You should only bring the essentials for the day on your bike. Drop-off times, transfer details, and any weight limits are listed in your travel documents. Discover the benefits of a cycling trip without having to carry your luggage.
What should you bring with you on your bike for the day?
Be sure to bring water, a few snacks, rain gear, a light warm layer, a fully charged phone, your ID, a form of payment, sunscreen, and a small first-aid kit.
A basic repair kit can also come in handy: a compatible inner tube, a tire lever, a mini pump, and a multi-tool. The 3-, 5-, or 7-day bike travel checklist helps you pack your belongings without overloading your luggage.
How do you follow the route without a guide?
Before departure, you will receive the documents you need to complete the various stages of the trip. Depending on the trip, these may include a route guide, maps, detailed directions, or digital tracks.
Major bike routes also have specific signage, but this can vary from one region to another. It’s still a good idea to keep your phone charged and to check the day’s route every morning.
What happens in the event of a breakdown or mechanical problem?
Details regarding assistance and contact information are provided in your travel documents. If you encounter any difficulties, you can contact the designated representative to determine the most appropriate solution: remote assistance, a nearby repair shop, or service provided by a local partner.
A minor flat tire or a derailed chain can often be fixed quickly. Some basic knowledge and a repair kit are always useful, even when your trip includes assistance.
What should you do if it rains during a stage?
Light rain usually doesn't prevent you from continuing your ride if you're wearing a suitable jacket and riding more cautiously. It's best to slow down, anticipate when you'll need to brake, and stay alert for slippery surfaces.
In case of inclement weather, check the local forecast and contact support if you need to adjust your itinerary. The itinerary will depend on the route, available transportation, and your location.
Can you go cycling alone?
Yes. An organized tour allows you to travel on your own while still having your accommodations booked, a pre-planned itinerary, and a point of contact in case of any problems.
The availability of single rooms and any additional fees depend on the tour. For your first solo trip, choose a popular route that’s well-connected and suited to your skill level.
Is it possible to go on a bike trip with kids?
Several trails are family-friendly thanks to their short distances, moderate elevation changes, opportunities for swimming or sightseeing, and limited traffic.
Age isn't the only factor to consider. You should also take into account the child's experience, stamina, independence, and ability to ride for several days. Check out our tips for planning a family bike trip.
Is it possible to go on a bike trip with a baby or a very young child?
Traveling with a baby requires a particularly easygoing itinerary, short legs of the trip, appropriate gear, and frequent breaks. The weather, road conditions, and proximity to amenities should also be carefully considered.
Since every situation is different, please consult with the Evazio team before selecting your trip. You can also check out our guide to cycling trips with a baby.
How do I get to the starting point of the trail and back after finishing?
The solution depends on the format you choose. A loop route returns to the starting point. A linear route connects two different cities and requires you to plan your return trip by train, shuttle, or another option specified in the program.
Renting a bike at your destination often makes linear trips easier. Our guide to traveling by bike and train outlines the main options.
When is the best time to travel by bike in France?
Most trips are offered between spring and fall. April, May, June, September, and October often feature pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.
Summer is a great time for coastal or shaded routes, as long as you adjust your schedule during heat waves. The ideal time depends on the region, elevation, and type of route. Discover the benefits of an off-season cycling trip.
Can you leave on the date of your choice?
Departure dates vary by tour. Some tours offer nearly daily departures during the season, while others require a specific departure date due to accommodations, transfers, or bike rentals.
Available dates are listed on each listing. Confirmation is still required at the time of booking.
How much does an organized cycling tour cost?
The price depends on the destination, duration, type of accommodations, season, and the options selected. Renting an electric bike, single rooms, certain meals, or additional nights may affect the budget.
Each listing shows a starting price and details of the services included. Our guide also explains how much a cycling trip in France costs.
How far in advance should I make a reservation?
For trips in the spring or fall, a few weeks’ notice may sometimes be enough. It’s best to plan further in advance for July, August, long weekends, family trips, group trips, or when renting multiple e-bikes.
Booking early gives you more options for accommodations and departure dates. Train tickets that include bike space should also be booked as soon as possible.
Can you customize a cycling trip?
Depending on the destination and your needs, Evazio can explore options to customize your trip: additional nights, accommodation category, bike rentals, different itineraries, group trips, or additional services.
Please provide your skill level, the number of participants, your preferred dates, and the type of experience you’re looking for. The team will be able to check availability and recommend the best-suited route for you. You can contact Evazio to plan your cycling trip.
