Your stay

A cycling tour to discover Bordeaux’s grands crus

A cycling tour along the Bordeaux Wine Route to discover the region’s most prestigious vineyards. Margaux, Pauillac, Pomerol and Saint-Émilion… Five days of cycling, combining the world’s finest wines with an exceptional historical and architectural heritage.

In this region where the waters of the Dordogne, the Garonne and the Atlantic converge to form Europe’s largest estuary, this holiday has something to satisfy every taste – whether you’re seeking nature and culture, leisure and sport, a friendly atmosphere or fine dining. Marshes, vineyards, forests, rivers, small harbours, charming towns and villages, a citadel, wine-producing châteaux and Romanesque churches make up the landscapes under the south-western sun!

The roads and cycle paths on this route take you through landscapes and sites that are as varied as they are remarkable. First, the left bank of the estuary and the Médoc vineyards. Then, after a boat crossing, the right bank with the citadel of Blaye and the beautiful village of Bourg-sur-Gironde. Further east, the Fronsadais region on the slopes of the Dordogne, followed by the Pomerol vineyards, not far from Libourne. You’ll pass by the famous Château Petrus and Château Cheval Blanc before staying in the medieval town of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Finally, a cycle path with gentle gradients – a former railway line – will guide you through the Entre-deux-Mers region towards the bastide town of Créon and the Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure. You’ll round off your cycling holiday along the Garonne and its fishing huts before cycling along Bordeaux’s majestic quays – also a UNESCO World Heritage Site – for a spectacular finale!

Each evening, you’ll be welcomed into charming hotels and guesthouses, and you’ll be delighted by the comfort of the accommodation we’ve selected, as well as by the quality of the regional cuisine you’ll enjoy at dinner.

You'll enjoy :

  • The world’s finest wines: Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, Petrus, Cheval Blanc.
  • The magnificent wine estates of the Bordeaux region, blending tradition and modernity.
  • The vineyards and village of Saint-Émilion, both listed as World Heritage Sites
  • The delightful Entre-Deux-Mers cycle route
  • Bordeaux and the ‘Cité du Vin’, a leading venue for exhibitions in the international wine world.

Day 2 - La Route des Châteaux du Médoc

You will leave Pauillac – home to three of the top five Grands Crus Classés and 15 Médoc Crus Classés – and head towards Margaux. You will discover the greatest stars of the 1855 wine classification, with their breathtaking architecture, as well as all the other gems of this renowned wine-growing region.

Your tour will take you past the famous Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild – all First Growths – as well as the Châteaux Pichon Longueville (Second Growth), Pontet-Canet and Lynch-Bages (Fifth Growth).

This itinerary is truly magnificent! Throughout this journey, you’ll travel from Pauillac to Moulis via Saint-Julien and the village of Margaux with its famous Château Margaux. Stop at the entrance to Château Margaux, where you can admire the classical façade of the building, constructed in the early 19th century.

Dinner, overnight stay and breakfast at the Golf Hotel in Margaux.

Day 3 - Crossing the estuary and the "Route de la Corniche

This route will take you to Lamarque, where you’ll board a ferry to cross the Gironde estuary.
You’ll then reach the magnificent citadel of Blaye before continuing your journey along the banks of the estuary. Imposing and majestic, the citadel overlooks the estuary, covering 33 hectares in the heart of the town and offering a splendid view of the Gironde.

You’ll cycle through the vineyards of the Côtes de Blaye AOC Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur. Finally, you’ll cycle towards Bourg-sur-Gironde along the Corniche Fleurie, where the presence of countless palm trees, oleanders and oaks reflects the region’s exceptionally mild climate.

A visit is a must for lovers of historic architecture: Bourg-sur-Gironde is an architectural gem. Perched on a rock and surrounded by walls, the village is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved in the Estuary.

Dinner, overnight stay and breakfast in a charming guesthouse near Bourg

Day 4 - Fronsac, Pomerol and Saint-Emilion vineyards

On the way to Saint-Emilion, you will pass through the vineyards of the other appellations: Fronsac, Lalande-de-Pomerol and Pomerol.
The Pomerol appellation, a close neighbour of Saint-Emilion, covers a small plateau to the north of Libourne; though the appellation covers a small area, it enjoys immense renown… The wines of Pomerol, where Merlot reigns supreme, are among the most sought-after in France, including the world-famous ‘Petrus’. As for Fronsac, it is the most historic part of the Bordeaux wine region, as Fronsac was served at the court of King Louis XIV…

At the confluence of two rivers, the Isle and the Dordogne, the great wine-growing terroirs of Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Fronsac blend seamlessly with superb landscapes of hillsides and plateaus. Forming a marvellous mosaic of plots, the vineyards stretch out as far as the eye can see.

On this new tour, you’ll discover magnificent estates, most of which are set amongst the vineyards and home to the winegrowers and their families. Despite the trials endured over the centuries, all these châteaux, with their remarkable architecture, have fortunately been preserved in their original state.

It is no coincidence that the famous painter Princeteau spent the latter part of his life in the region… so that he could admire that very special light over the vineyards and groves, stretching down the hillsides to the banks of the Dordogne! A stop in Nérac is a must, where the view is magnificent…

Overnight stay and breakfast in a 4* hotel or a charming guesthouse in Saint-Émilion

Day 5 - Saint-Emilion! Vineyards, architecture and landscapes

This tour of the Saint-Émilion appellation will take you through the eastern part of the appellation, amongst vineyards and hamlets… On the itinerary: wine châteaux, historic buildings and stunning views. You can head to Castillon-la-Bataille and return along the banks of the Dordogne.
Make the most of your free time to visit the medieval town of Saint-Émilion.

You’ll be staying at the same hotel as the previous night.

Day 6 - Saint-Emilion - Bordeaux

After passing through Branne-sur-la-Dordogne, you’ll join the ‘Roger Lapébie’ cycle route and enjoy an ideal route for a cycle ride, set amidst natural landscapes but featuring several designated rest stops and water points. You’ll follow this pleasant route, which is very easy to cycle on, and which will take you to Créon, a typical regional bastide village. This charming bastide is well worth a visit, and the small villages are brimming with chapels and churches.

A natural and architectural heritage that remains well-preserved, featuring varied, rolling landscapes accessible to all. A rich architectural heritage, including medieval towns, bastides, fortified mills, abbeys and Romanesque churches.
This route will take you to the majestic Place de la Bourse in the heart of Bordeaux. You’ll then have a panoramic view of the quays, the Garonne and the Pont de Pierre, which you’ll have crossed just a few minutes earlier!

Overnight stay and breakfast at a 5* hotel in Bordeaux
