The Garonne Canal by bike. From Bordeaux to Toulouse.
In fact, it’s the first part of the Canal des Deux Mers linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, as an extension of the Canal du Midi. This “Canal de Garonne à vélo” tour is also available from Toulouse to Bordeaux.
This bike tour links Bordeaux, the wine capital, with Toulouse, the pink city and capital of violets… Two emblematic cities with very different characters, but which come together in culinary terms! From Bordeaux, you’ll cycle to the start of the Garonne Canal at Castets en Dorthe, after a ride through the Entre-deux-Mers region, on a pleasant cycle path winding through vineyards and typical bastides such as Créon or Sauveterre de Guyenne. The tour then continues along the canal, punctuated by 53 locks and several remarkable engineering structures such as the Pente d’Eau de Montech and the famous Pont Canal d’Agen. This impressive canal bridge, more than 500 metres long, provides access to the center of Agen, with its 2,000-year history and capital of the Pruneau…
You’ll pedal along a 90% equipped greenway, which is very easy to ride, first on a former railroad line, then on the old towpath lined with plane trees. This very peaceful cycle ride along vineyards, hillsides, hedged farmland and orchards will take you through a number of bastides and small, peaceful villages with their obvious gentle way of life. And don’t forget Moissac, nestled at the confluence of the Tarn and Garonne rivers, a mecca of Romanesque art, with the cloister of its abbey church… one of the most beautiful in the world!
You’ll finally reach the heart of Toulouse and its famous Place du Capitole! If you wish, we can also offer this tour in the opposite direction, from Toulouse to Bordeaux.
You'll enjoy :
- The rolling countryside of the Entre-Deux-Mers region, with its pretty bastides (fortified towns)
- A pleasant cycle path between canal and century-old plane trees, punctuated by locks
- The many remarkable engineering structures along the route, such as the Canal Bridge at Agen
- The Cloister of the Abbey of Moissac, at the mouth of the river Tarn
- Toulouse The “pink city
Daily program
Day 1 - Arrival in Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Bed and Breakfast accommodation in *** hotels or charming B&Bs in the heart of Bordeaux. Handover of your bike, documentation on the region and a route booklet indicating your itinerary.
Bordeaux, the ancient Roman “Burdigala”, indissociable from its vineyards…shines brightly in its stone finery to dispense with artifice. The Garonne River, the heart of the city, welcomes walkers on its banks or for boat trips. Everyone can make the quays their own, in the hope of witnessing the stopover of a cruise liner, the “astonishing spectacle” of a giant of the seas in the heart of the city.
Day 2 - From Bordeaux to Entre-deux Mers
- 40 à 60 km
- 200m
From Bordeaux to the Sauveterre area
This itinerary allows you to discover the Entre-deux-Mers region on 55 km of trails, greenways and small roads… A real treat!
You’ll leave Bordeaux on the track that runs alongside the Garonne and its marvellous quays, then follow the greenway that winds through the Entre-deux-Mers hillsides, passing through Créon and Sauveterre de Guyenne, both magnificent fortified bastides. Finally, you’ll make your way back to your accommodation on small roads through the vineyards.
Night, dinner and breakfast in a charming B&B.
Day 3 - The start of the Canal de Garonne
- 25 à 55 km
- 225m
From near Sauveterre to near Marmande
The greenway here is royal: it alternates between vineyards and small forests, and crosses several railway stations that have been converted into residential homes. Despite a few false flats, the trail is easy and offers a breath of fresh air.
On this slightly shorter stage, you can take advantage of the many stops along the way. At the end of the afternoon, you’ll be welcomed in a charming B&B.
Dinner, overnight stay and breakfast.
Day 4 - The Garonne Valley and its treasures
- 55 à 60 km
- 100m
From Marmande to Sérignac
The tour continues through the rich Garonne valley and its orchards. This is a very pleasant itinerary, especially between Buzet and Meilhan-sur-Garonne, where you’ll be able to drive under large plane trees, and discover Buzet-sur-Baïse, Le Mas d’Agenais and many other pretty little towns.
The Sérignac nautical stopover is a haven of tranquillity on the banks of the canal. In the village, visitors will discover a 13th-century bastide house, streets lined with cornices and a friendly atmosphere.
Overnight in hotel***.and breakfast. Optional dinner
Day 5 - Sérignac sur Garonne to Moissac
- 60 km
- 60m
This is one of the most beautiful stages, with so many points of interest. This easy, safe route, in the welcome shade of the plane trees, takes you to some superb sites, including the Baïse bridge-canal, the Agen bridge-canal, Auvillar, the Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave lake and Moissac.
For your last accommodation along the canal, enjoy the peace and splendor of a hotel with a panoramic view of the Tarn, which meets the Garonne at precisely this point.
Overnight in *** hotel with breakfast. Optional dinner
Day 6 - Between Abbey and Capitol
- 64 km
- 100m
From Moissac to Toulouse
Here, the Canal de Garonne underscores the rural charm of the villages of Tarn-et-Garonne, dominated by churches built in the pure Toulouse Gothic style. For example, you can visit Montech, famous for its marina and unique water slope. This peaceful stage, in the shade of plane trees, ends with a few kilometers of slightly less tranquil roads into Toulouse, but they do provide access to the heart of the city – a real comfort!
Toulouse is well worth a long visit, with its famous Place du Capitole and the quays of the Garonne, a magical place at sunset. A city of distinctive architecture, Toulouse is nicknamed the “pink city” because of the terracotta bricks used to build its houses. Its other nickname is the “city of violets”, a flower that you can taste in all its forms!
