On the program, the Burgundy wine Route. No one can spend a cycling holiday in Burgundy without crisscrossing this thin strip of world-famous land between Dijon and Chagny. Each wine-growing terroir in this region is called in Burgundian terms “the climat”, some responding to famous names such as Chambertin, Romanée-Conti, Clos de Vougeot, Montrachet, Corton, Musigny … Bike tour through the Côtes de Beaune and Côtes de Nuits, in the heart of a wine-growing landscape shaped by man, showing an extreme refinement and exceptional architectural monuments such as the Hospices de Beaune, the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy in Dijon, the Château du Clos de Vougeot… Not surprising this area has been classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO.Your bike rides will also take you into the hinterland by pleasant country roads and greenways along the “Canal du Centre” linking the Saône valleys and the Loire valley then the “Canal de Bourgogne” linking the Yonne river to the Saône river along the peaceful Ouche valley. Among other things, you will discover the town of Nolay at the gates of Morvan region, a typical Hautes-Côtes de Beaune town nestled in a charming valley between vineyards and cliffs. It has managed to keep charming medieval architecture and exceptional halls, testimony to a long trading tradition. Further north, Châteauneuf en Auxois. Perched on its rocky outcrop, its medieval village and its imposing fortress make it one of the most beautiful views in the region!
Please note that this loop cycling holiday can start and finish either in Beaune or in Dijon.
- Peaceful roads in the heart of the vineyard and along the canals
- UNESCO-listed wine landscapes
- The hinterland with medieval traces, between green valleys and forests
- Chateauneuf en Auxois and its fortress perched on its rocky outcrop
- Tasting of the local gastronomy in one of the gourmet restaurants in Dijon or Beaune
Beaune is a renowned city for the wines of Bourgogne and also for its historical past.. In fact the old Gaul sanctuary which then came under the Romans was also the residence of the Dukes of Bourgogne until the X1Vth century! The heart of the town is surrounded by remparts built in the XVth century where one can visit the entire place on foot. The famous hospices, the wine museum and the old cellars are not to be missed.
And we won’t forget to advice on where to find the best restaurants and wine bars in the town
After having gone through the villages of Pommard and Nolay, south of Beaune you will then ride through the great wine area of Chardonnay until you get to the canal du centre. You will follow the canal before entering the “hinterland” via a beautiful fracture in the limestone plateau. The small valley ,the Cozanne will lead you to Nolay. An old crossroads for trading, this village is today far from the flashy lights of Beaune!
The hotel is situated on the site of the old market place; a remarkable building in chestnut wood and wooden slatted roof!
Today you will be leaving the vineyards for the plateau. The slopes are not steep at all, but there is a flat stretch which lasts for about ten or so kilometers. Once on the plateau, the scenery changes radically. It’s now a question of great open spaces, isolated farms, leafy forests, herds of Charolais cattle. After the castle of Corabeuf and the beautiful Roman column at Cussy, the village at Bligny-sur-Ouche comes as a welcome relief for a stop. The baker is still baking his bread in a wood fired oven and the market is the week’s attraction.
From Bligny you ride down into the valley d’Ouche until you get to the Bourgogne canal where you continue until you get to Châteauneuf. The longer route takes you to Arnay le Duc before rejoining the canal.
You go through the forest of Bouhey to get to La Buissière-sur-Ouche. From there you continue alongside the canal until you get to Dijon. You can cover this distance in the morning so as to spend the afternoon visiting Dijon. Your hotel is in the centre of town which makes exploring the place easy! Well known for its mustard, the capital of the Dukes of Bourgogne is also a high spot for gastronomic eating
Now that you have had a good night sleep you are ready to set off South. You will go through the the vintage wine area of Bourgogne spotting the enchanting names. This wine route is a pleasure for the eye and for the biker. Nuits St Georges for lunch before reaching the Cotes de Beaune and ending the trip with Aloxe Corton.
