Canal de Garonne cycling tour

The Canal de Garonne Cycling tour between Toulouse and Bordeaux along the Canal des Deux Mers. It is the first part of the Canal des Deux Mers connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, in extension of the Canal du Midi. This cycling holiday will amaze you in front of the riches of Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrénées.Thus connecting Toulouse, the pink city, capital of violet to Bordeaux, the most famous vineyard in the world… Two emblematic cities from the South-West  of France and with well-tempered characters!From Toulouse, you will enjoy the beginning of the Channel of Garonne by bike. Along  waterways, you will travel amidst beautiful natural landscapes. But also fortified bastides of the Middle Ages like Damazan or the Mas d’Agenais. Not to mention Moissac nestled at the confluence of the Tarn and the Garonne, a high place of Romanesque art with the cloister of the abbey. The water slope of Montech and the famous Pont-Canal d’Agen are a part of the highlights of you cycling tour.The cycling tour then continues along the canal, punctuated by 53 locks and several remarkable works of art. This impressive canal bridge, more than 500 metres long, provides access to the cobbled streets of Agen, with a rich heritage of 2000 years of history and plum capital.Then, you will pedal on a green path, in the middle of the vineyard of the Entre-deux-Mers at the gates of Bordeaux. Beautiful natural landscapes will appear before your eyes. This cycling adventure, very peaceful, along vineyards, Medieval towns, hillsides, and orchards will take you through many bastides and small villages of the Southwest with the obvious sweetness of life. You will finally reach the heart of Bordeaux classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site and its famous vineyard of Saint-Emilion, Sauternes, and the Médoc.In order to complete your beautiful cycling trips in the South-West. Why don’t you  stay 1 or 2 days in Bordeaux? The emblematic capital of wine and historic city with its World Heritage-listed docks is waiting for you. To be more confortable during your cycling tours, we can Bike hire or an E-bike as you prefer! If you wish, we also offer this circuit in the opposite direction from Bordeaux to Toulouse.

Program

Day 1Arrival in Toulouse, France, the "Pink City"

Bed and Breakfast accommodation in *** hotels with breakfast in the heart of Toulouse. Delivery of your bike, a documentation about the region and the Road book on which will be indicated your cycling holiday. Toulouse, deserves a long visit, with its famous Place du Capitole and the site of the Garonne docks, magical place at sunset. A city with characteristic architecture, Toulouse is called the “pink city” because of the terracotta brick used for the construction of houses. Its other nickname is the «city of violets», flower that you can taste in all its forms! Toulouse is the best area to taste the South of France gastronomy like the “cassoulet”.

Day 2From Toulouse to Moissac through canal de Garonne 64 km

You will start your cycling tour along the river in the “Haute Garonne” department, ranked in the first French departments for its quality of life and the warm colours of the city of “Toulouse”. This 67 kilometer stage takes place on a green path,and backroads safe and quiet, and especially always in the shade of plane trees. This bike path will take you to Montech and its water slope; one of the most beautiful works of art of Tarn-et-Garonne. Then, your itinerary will take you to Moissac on a bicycle road along the channel of the two seas and its barges. A small town that is part of a landscape dominated by orchards and AOC chasselas grape vines. invites you to sail between cultural tourism and green leisure.

Day 3From Moissac to Sérignac sur Garonne 60 km

Towpaths are royal: This stage offers many points of interest throughout your journey. Only the crossing of Agen, the capital of Pruneau, is a bit tricky, but enjoy to taste the wonders of this city: rich in its 2000 years of history, the city unveils its heritage through the medieval streets. Once on the bike path, you will cross a succession of 3 locks to reach your destination of the day: Sérignac-sur-Garonne. Bastide of the thirteenth century, its half-timbered houses and its “belfry tors” are unique in the south-west. The nautical port of Sérignac is a heaven of tranquility at the edge of the canal.

Day 4From Sérignac-sur-Garonne to Meilhan 55 to 60 km

Your bike holidays continue along this canal; there are plenty of opportunities to stop at this stage: “Le Mas d’Agenais” with its fortified rampart and the famous painting “Christ in the Cross” by Rembrandt or simply to have a picnic on the banks of the canal. Pedaling along the waterways you can discover fabulous sites: The bastide of Damazan, Villeton and its nautical base continues in the rich valley of the Garonne and its orchards. This very pleasant itinerary, especially between Buzet and Meilhan-sur-Garonne, where you can be on your two wheels under large plane trees, will allow you to discover Buzet-sur-Baïse, and many other beautiful small towns.

Day 5From Meilhan to Sauveterre-de-guyenne 25 to 55 km

This stage is one of the most beautiful as there are many points of interest. This green lane is easy and well secured, in the healthy shade of plane trees. Cyclists will discover superb sites along the canals and locks such as: Saint-Macaire and its vineyard, La Réole and its millennial history. For your last accommodation along the canal you will enjoy the calm and splendour of a guest room.

Day 6The Green Way to Bordeaux in Aquitaine 40 to 60 km

Vous terminerez votre voyage à vélo à travers coteaux, villages,et vignes. Vous pédalerez au milieu des vignobles de l’Entre-deux-Mers sur une très agréable piste cyclable, ancienne voie ferrée, et pourrez visiter la bastidede  Créon ou encore l’Abbaye de la Sauve Majeure. Vous atteindrez alors “la belle endormie”: Bordeaux, l’ancienne « Burdigala » romaine, indissociable de son vignoble…rayonne amplement dans sa parure de pierres pour se dispenser d’artifices classée au Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. Le fleuve Garonne, cœur de la ville, accueille les promeneurs sur les berges ou pour des balades en bateau. le tourisme fluvial est très développé ainsi chacun peut s’approprier les quais, en espérant être témoin de l’escale d’un paquebot de croisière, « spectacle étonnant » d’un géant des mers en plein centre ville.

Day 7Departure

After breakfast make your way to your chosen departure point, or stay on in « Bordeaux » for one or two extra nights to enjoy the city’s attractive ambiance. You can also visit a chateau in the most important french wine region. A wine guide will explain you everything about Bordeaux wine: Red wines, white wines, Grands Crus Classés 1855, wine growing, wine industry, winemaking, appellations, winemakers but alsop grape varieties like Malbec, Cabernet sauvignon or Merlot, Cabernet Franc… Of course, you’ll finish with tastings of right bank wines (St Emilion ) and also left bank like the Médoc or Sauternes!

We take care of transporting your luggage at each change of accommodation so that you travel light and take full advantage of your daily hike.

You leave your luggage at the reception of your accommodation before your departure .

At the end of the afternoon, you will find them at the reception of your new accommodation or directly in your room.

Luggage accepted per person: 1 suitcase or travel bag (20 kg maximum) + 1 piece of hand luggage.

We remind you that rental bicycles are equipped with saddlebags to be used to transport the things you deem useful for the day

Your travel record corresponds to the documents or files you receive before your trip (usually a month before) and upon arrival at the first accommodation.

It includes:

  • A welcome letter with the main practical information:
  • The time slot for baggage transport
  • Details of the delivery and collection of bikes from rental if necessary
  • Your local contact and telephone number (s) in case of emergency
  • Any additional information
  • The logbook travel package including map with the route (to the appropriate scale) and directional, tourist and practical indications
  • The necessary voucher (s) to be given to the service provider (s) (only if necessary!)

On request and depending on the circuits:

  • The “Evazio” application to download from smartphone for “GPS” navigation with visual guidance (reading of the track on the your smartphone) and / or oral.
  • The application also contains practical and tourist information. Once the trip has been downloaded, no internet connection is necessary
  • The loan of a GPS device with the pre-recorded tracks
  • Sends GPX tracks of each stage to be used with your own navigation support

On this circuit, we suggest that you provide you with the choice and by reservation:

  • A hybrid bike suitable for hiking and for the route
  • An electric bike adapted to the route

With its equipment:

  • 1 rear bag
  • 1 handlebar bag
  • 1 set of repair
  • 1 helmet (on request)
  • 1 anti-theft device
  • 1 charger (for the electric bike)

For the youngest, we can offer depending on age and size

  • A child’s bike
  • A baby seat
  • A trailer
  • A follow-up bike

The bike is delivered to the first accommodation and is adjusted to your size.

At the end of the tour, the bike must be left at the last accommodation with its equipment. We will take care of their recovery.

This tour is available in a “superior” version.

The type of accommodation is classified into 3 ranges:

Comfort : The circuit mainly presents hotels classified 2 and 3 stars (or equivalent) and rooms of host.

Superior : The circuit mainly presents hotels classified 3 and 4 stars (or equivalent) and charming guest rooms.

Luxury : The circuit mainly presents 4 and 5 star hotels or equivalent
