The Vélodyssée – Atlantic Coast Route is the longest cycle route in France, 1200 km long. You can cycle along the Atlantic coast from Roscoff to Hendaye or the way round. The itinerary goes through Brittany along a portion of Nantes to Brest canal till Nantes and continues across Vendée, Charente-Maritime before reaching Gironde, the Arcachon bay, the pine forest of the Landes country and at the end Hendaye and the Spanish border.. The most popular period for cycling the Vélodyssée also knowed as the Atlantic Coast Route, is the summer season and more exactly from July 10 to August 20. If you are looking for peacefulness on the beaches and along the trip, plan your cycling holiday outside this period. As often, May, June and September, are the most enjoyable months for bike rides, except perhaps for the water which is still a bit cool in May and June! The north part of the Vélodyssée along the Atlantic coast, between Nantes and La Rochelle has a few sections on pleasant stabilized paths (“white paths”) and so unpaved. Most of them are on the Vendée part. On this section, it is better to use wide hybrid tires type. On the other hand, on the south part, from La Rochelle to Hendaye, all the stages are paved.
