From the landing beaches to Mont-Saint-Michel by bike. Cycling trip on the west coast of Normandy

This trip will give you the opportunity to reach the magnificent Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel by bike from the famous landing beaches in western Normandy. A multi-faceted bicycle tour through recent history and World War II D-Day and medieval history; all in unique natural landscapes and along the peaceful roads of Calvados and Cotentin. In the program,Recent history side: the beaches of Juno, Gold and Omaha which has been the theater of American, British and Canadian troops landing on June 06, 1944. We leave “Utah beach” aside for the moment. A good pretext to come back and visit this beautiful region of France! You can visit the moving American cemetery in Collevile-sur-Mer or the remains of the artificial harbor of Mulberry. A first part of a vacation full of history and emotions.In terms of older history, you will have the opportunity to visit the medieval city of Bayeux with its unmissable Tapestry and its cathedral, to ride along some remarkable abbeys and to stroll through the alleys of Mont Saint-Michel.This Normandye bike tour will follow the sea coasts of the English Channel, but also the peaceful Aure valley in the hinterland. It will cross the Cotentin Marshes Natural Park with its typical Normandy landscape made of groves and gentle hills offering here and there remarkable and relaxing panoramas. You could see the English islands of Gersey and Guernsey! After the city of Avranches, the route will finally lead to the spectacular Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, its salt meadows occupied by adorable flocks of sheep and its local oyster farmers. Get your camera ready quickly. The amazing Mont-Saint-Michel will soon occupy all the space!

Day 1Arrival in Bayeux

You must find some time tovisit the famous tapestry, the cathedral, and the commonwealth war museum, which are allocated in the centerof the town, as well as the wonderfully preserved old part of the town.Being the allies head quarter soon after the landing, Bayeux has not been bombed and is extremely well preserved

Day 2from Bayeux to Bayeux. Loop ride toward Arromanches 36 or 61 km - 210 or 550 m

You cycle east towards Courseulles and Juno Beach. After a stop at the peaceful Canadian cemetery, you ride westwards along the coast (Gold beach) in order to visit Arromancheswith its remarkable artificial harbour (Mulberry) and the German battery of Longues-sur-Mer before returning to Bayeux following the pretty Aure valley

Day 3From Bayeux to Carentan 62 or 76 km - 410 or 460 m

Joining the new cycling way, you ride through a very nice part of the Bessin toget toOmaha beach andits impressive American cemetery at Colleville sur mer. After la pointe du Hoc, we suggest a quiet road south, passing near the German cemetery at La Cambe before entering the Natural park tofind your accommodation in the centerof Carentan

Day 4From Carentan to Agon-Coutainville 55 km - 380 m

Today you are ridding south on small country road through the marsh. Then the landscape starts changing for small hills and isolated dairy farms. After passing Coutances and its great cathedral you ride west to the coast south of the Sienne River. The contrast between the austere granite villages and the clear blue see of the sea is quiet picturesque.You are staying in a family run hotel by the sea

Day 5From Agon-Coutainville to Granville 48 km - 315 m

The short ride basically follows the coast all the way to Granville. On very narrow roads you willassist to activities of the farmers of the sea. In fact, tractors and workers are following the tide down in the sea to work on oyster and mussel fields…a very impressive siteThe longer route takes you inland through the “Bocage” to the old abbey of Hambye before rejoining the shorter route along the coastYour hotel is located on the yacht club of Granville!

Day 6From Granville to Avranches 47 or 59 km - 530 or 670 m

The coastal road being too busy, our route takes you inland and rolling hills to the well preserved Abbey of La Lucerne. As the main road leaves the coast further south you cycle westuntil you discover the bay around Saint-Jean-le-Thomas. You follow it to the south headland of Grouin before finishingup to Avranches historical part of town.

Day 7From Avranches to Mont-Saint Michel or Pontorson 29 or 57 km - 115 or 415 m

Today is given up to the visit of the Mont-Saint-Michel, the Abbey and the bayYou start with a great downhill from Avranches to the Mont-Saint-Michel bayand its Abbey. On the way you cycle through quaint country side, see herds of sheep on the reclaim land andpass by the German War Memorial ofHuisnes-sur-Mer. Once at the Mont-St-Michel you can check-in, leave your bike at the hotel andgo on with the visit. You need aminimum of3 hours to visit the Mont-St-Michel “town island” and its abbey on foot.In the evening you will have the whole place lighten for you!

We take care of transporting your luggage at each change of accommodation so that you travel light and take full advantage of your daily hike.

You leave your luggage at the reception of your accommodation before your departure .

At the end of the afternoon, you will find them at the reception of your new accommodation or directly in your room.

Luggage accepted per person: 1 suitcase or travel bag (20 kg maximum) + 1 piece of hand luggage.

We remind you that rental bicycles are equipped with saddlebags to be used to transport the things you deem useful for the day

Your travel record corresponds to the documents or files you receive before your trip (usually a month before) and upon arrival at the first accommodation.

It includes:

  • A welcome letter with the main practical information:
  • The time slot for baggage transport
  • Details of the delivery and collection of bikes from rental if necessary
  • Your local contact and telephone number (s) in case of emergency
  • Any additional information
  • The logbook travel package including map with the route (to the appropriate scale) and directional, tourist and practical indications
  • The necessary voucher (s) to be given to the service provider (s) (only if necessary!)

On request and depending on the circuits:

  • The “Evazio” application to download from smartphone for “GPS” navigation with visual guidance (reading of the track on the your smartphone) and / or oral.
  • The application also contains practical and tourist information. Once the trip has been downloaded, no internet connection is necessary
  • The loan of a GPS device with the pre-recorded tracks
  • Sends GPX tracks of each stage to be used with your own navigation support

On this circuit, we suggest that you provide you with the choice and by reservation:

  • A hybrid bike suitable for hiking and for the route
  • An electric bike adapted to the route

With its equipment:

  • 1 rear bag
  • 1 handlebar bag
  • 1 set of repair
  • 1 helmet
  • 1 anti-theft device
  • 1 charger (for the electric bike)

For the youngest, we can offer depending on age and size

  • A child’s bike
  • A baby seat
  • A trailer
  • A follow-up bike

The bike is delivered to the first accommodation and is adjusted to your size.

At the end of the tour, the bike must be left at the last accommodation with its equipment. We will take care of their recovery.

This tour is available in comfort or superior version.

The type of accommodation is classified into 3 ranges:

Comfort : The circuit mainly presents hotels classified 2 and 3 stars (or equivalent) and rooms of host.

Superior : The circuit mainly presents hotels classified 3 and 4 stars (or equivalent) and charming guest rooms.

Luxury : The circuit mainly presents 4 and 5 star hotels or equivalent
