The Champagne cycling tour! Go and discover the prestigious vineyard of Champagne, on an itinerary leading you from Reims, France’s great coronation city, to Épernay where the world greatest Champagne producers are located. Between the natural regional parc, Veloroute of the Vallee de la Marne and bucolic wine paths, follow the famous wine route fringed with charming villages in the hollow of the valley.

The heart of Champagne area is marked by French history, arts and culture. You will meet men and women, happy to share their passion, their love of their region, their sparkling wine and their knowledge. Exploring the Champagne region by bicycle is a trip rich in diversity. The whole region is marked by the omnipresence of the vineyards. Enjoy the shimmering countryside during your cycling tour between the Marne Valley and the Montagne de Reims Natural Park.

Discover this Art and History city ! Famous “great coronation city”  This area also has a fabulous religious heritage with its Reims cathedral Notre Dame, one of the most major gothic art construction in Europe, Reims is particularly attractive for its numerous Art Déco districts typical of the 1920s.

The gastronomy is not left behind with many local specialties among them the Ham and the Reims Rose Biscuits or the Champagne Truffle. Sweet delicacies to accompany a glass of Champagne are not lacking either …

Cycle to Côte des Blancs. Pedal along of the classified Grand Cru villages on the slopes producing Chardonnay  or Pinot Meunier grapes. Discover typical villages nested between the vineyard and the lush forest lost before returning to Epernay.

Program

Day 1Arrival

Participants arrive by their own means at their hotel in Reims in the afternoon.

The hotel’s reception will give them a tour package with instructions and the essentials to have a successful tour (road-book, maps, tourist information…). Overnight stay.

Day 2Reims - Matougues 50 km

After breakfast you will leave by bike heading for Epernay via Tinqueux, going through typical villages of the vineyards of the “Montagne de Reims”: Mailly Champagne, Verzenay, Bouzy, … Arriving at the end of the day in Matougues. Overnight stay.

Day 3Matougues - Epernay 29 km

After breakfast, short and easy ride to Epernay, alongside the Marne canal. You will have time in the afternoon to discover the Capital of Champagne wines: Epernay and maybe start with some visits at of the most impressive cellars in Epernay. Overnight stay in Epernay in 3* hotel or charming Bed and Breakfast.

Day 4Epernay - Epernay , Loop ride in Marne Valley 36 km

Wending your way between vines and hillsides, the Champagne Trail in Marne Valley will introduce you to the rich viticultural heritage. Frequently overlooking the valley, this itinerary affords wonderful views. Your trail snakes through the vines leading to Hautvillers, a charming village known for its Benedictine abbey. Then you will head to Cumières to stop for a lunch break for example in a restaurant sculpted in chalk. On the way to Venteuil, you can enjoy a view of Château de Boursault. The valley trail will take you through villages between vines, fields and forests all the way to Reuil. Back to Epernay on the other side of the Marne. Overnight stay in Epernay in 3* hotel or charming Bed and Breakfast.

Day 5Epernay – Epernay Loop ride in Cote de Blancs 28 km

Today you will visit the vineyards of The Côte des Blancs which is the homeland of the Chardonnay grape. Following Champagne Tourist Trail, descend towards Pierry – where you can visit its 18th century château, storeroom and cellars – and also Chavot-Courcourt church (12th c.), a solitary island of stone in an ocean of vines. After Cuis and its fine Romanesque church the trail will take you close to cliffs to reach Cramant and its over-sized bottle (8.50 metres) and not far from there the small village of Avize decorated in frescoes (of which many can be found in Champagne). Back to Epernay in the afternoon. Overnight stay in Epernay in 3* hotel or charming Bed and Breakfast.

Day 6Epernay - Reims 35 km

After breakfast you will discover the national forest of Hautvillers by passing through Avenay Val d’Or, Germaine. You will then return to Reims via Ludes. Overnight stay in Reims.

Day 7Departure.

We take care of transporting your luggage at each change of accommodation so that you travel light and take full advantage of your daily hike.

You leave your luggage at the reception of your accommodation before your departure .

At the end of the afternoon, you will find them at the reception of your new accommodation or directly in your room.

Luggage accepted per person: 1 suitcase or travel bag (20 kg maximum) + 1 piece of hand luggage.

We remind you that rental bicycles are equipped with saddlebags to be used to transport the things you deem useful for the day

Your travel record corresponds to the documents or files you receive before your trip (usually a month before) and upon arrival at the first accommodation.

It includes:

  • A welcome letter with the main practical information:
  • The time slot for baggage transport
  • Details of the delivery and collection of bikes from rental if necessary
  • Your local contact and telephone number (s) in case of emergency
  • Any additional information
  • The logbook travel package including map with the route (to the appropriate scale) and directional, tourist and practical indications
  • The necessary voucher (s) to be given to the service provider (s) (only if necessary!)

On request and depending on the circuits:

  • The “Evazio” application to download from smartphone for “GPS” navigation with visual guidance (reading of the track on the your smartphone) and / or oral.
  • The application also contains practical and tourist information. Once the trip has been downloaded, no internet connection is necessary
  • The loan of a GPS device with the pre-recorded tracks
  • Sends GPX tracks of each stage to be used with your own navigation support

On this circuit, we suggest that you provide you with the choice and by reservation:

  • A hybrid bike suitable for hiking and for the route
  • An electric bike adapted to the route

With its equipment:

  • 1 rear bag
  • 1 handlebar bag
  • 1 set of repair
  • 1 helmet
  • 1 anti-theft device
  • 1 charger (for the electric bike)

For the youngest, we can offer depending on age and size

  • A child’s bike
  • A baby seat
  • A trailer
  • A follow-up bike

The bike is delivered to the first accommodation and is adjusted to your size.

At the end of the tour, the bike must be left at the last accommodation with its equipment. We will take care of their recovery.

This tour is available in a “superior” version.

The type of accommodation is classified into 3 ranges:

Comfort : The circuit mainly presents hotels classified 2 and 3 stars (or equivalent) and rooms of host.

Superior : The circuit mainly presents hotels classified 3 and 4 stars (or equivalent) and charming guest rooms.

Luxury : The circuit mainly presents 4 and 5 star hotels or equivalent
